A new age has been heralded in in Saarland.

Bonn: The head of the Saarland Supervisory Authority responsible for Private Broadcasters (Landesmedienanstalt), Dr. Gerd Bauer, together with the Head of the Saarland State Chancellery, Minister Karl Rauber, representing the state government, presented the new L band in Saarland today.

The new broadcasters took the opportunity at the well-attended event to present their program concept and the target groups involved. Without exception, the programs can only be received via DAB in the coverage area, thus laying the foundation for successfully marketing digital radio. The various formats address very different target groups, which are defined not only by their tastes in music, but also especially by other common interests or cultural affiliations. A second key programming aspect thus becomes apparent, namely the opportunity for niche radio. The complete IMDR (Initiative Marketing Digital Radio) press release can be found here.

IMDR comments on radio broadcasts via T-DVB

Bonn: The Berlin initiative to broadcast radio programs on a regular basis via T-DVB in the future will open up yet another distribution path for radio, as has already been the case with cable, satellite and the Internet. These latter distribution paths are only being marginally used, however, because they do not meet consumers' mobility expectations for radio. This will also hold true for T-DVB. This distribution channel will therefore never present a challenge to the main radio distribution paths - VHF and, in the future, DAB/DMB - or even become a serious contender. Radio is attractive due to its local and regional character, which is in line with program provider structures and the coverage areas of VHF and, in the future, DAB. While the Berlin initiative can map the central radio structures of Berlin, radio broadcasts via T-DVB are not in tune with market conditions in the large states, where listeners have strong regional and local ties. The complete IMDR press release can be found here.

With some 2,300 employees, VGF is the largest public transport company in Hesse and carries over 150 million passengers annually.

Digital radio will use several systems Technology Commission has assessed systems for digital radio
In connection with the debate on the future of digital radio (DAB), the conference of the directors of the regional media broadcasting authorities (DLM) also requested their Technology Commission (TKLM) in late 2004, headed by Prof. Thomas Hirschle, to draw up a comparative assessment of the transmission systems currently available for digital terrestrial radio. The results of the study, which focused on Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB), Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB T) and Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld (DVB-H), are now available:
  • Of all the systems that were looked at, none is currently able to fully map the familiar VHF radio structures and usage patterns. Thus, the introduction of digital radio transmission systems will necessarily entail structural changes.
  • At present, only the standardized DAB system with all components is available for digitization of radio broadcasting under normal operational conditions. It is also the system that is best adapted to VHF usage patterns so far.
